Meditation, yoga, diet and connection all play an important part in enabling us to find space and harmony during our lifetime. For hundreds of years those practicing Ayurveda knew this, they also knew the importance of aromas in assisting the balancing of our emotions.

Highly concentrated plant essences have a profound influence on the mind and have the ability to affect various systems in the body on both a physical and emotional level.  This in turn affects your behaviour and actions to enrich and deepen your life experience and happiness.

When you notice a powerful fragrance of a plant, you are experiencing the volatile oils evaporating in your sinus cavities where they are then detected by your olfactory nerves.  Hence these gorgeous aromas don’t just smell amazing they can have positive therapeutic effects. The olfactory bulbs are part of the limbic system of the brain, this system rules the emotions, which is why smelling certain essential oils often triggers emotions including a sense of peace, joy, contentment or excitement.

Besides triggering emotions, the limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance. Feeding the limbic system with therapeutic essential oils can balance emotions and the functions that the limbic system controls.

Banyan Botanicals suggest that when inhaled, essential oils primarily work on the sub-dosha of Vata called Prana Vata.

  • Alertness: Peppermint, juniper berry, black pepper
  • Anger: Lavender, ylang ylang, elevation
  • Concentration: Intune, lemon, peppermint
  • Creativity: Frankincense, sandalwood, cypress
  • Depression: Frankincense, balance, bergamot
  • Grief: Elevation, balance, grapefruit, wintergreen
  • Happiness: Wild organs, spearmint, sandalwood
  • Stress: Clary sage, lavender peace, elevation

You can choose to either inhale these oils directly from the bottle, your hands or a tissue and/or diffuse a few drops in your home, office or car.

Massaging a combination of these magical oils onto your back, chest, neck and ears is also a great way to support emotional wellbeing.  The combination of aroma and touch is very powerful especially on small children and the elderly.

 

Emotions are simply the way we currently feel due to past experiences.  Thankfully we can know that they will pass.  Sometimes it takes just a moment, other times, deep seeded emotions take years to shift with continued mindfulness and processing.

The power our emotions play on our overall health and wellbeing is something we should all be aware of, the more positive and higher vibrational thoughts we have, the better we will feel and simultaneously our physical body will also reflect these positive vibes with abundant good health and vitality.
